Role of Individual Therapy in Drug Addiction Treatment

Giving off any prescribed drug, alcohol, or any other street drug is a big deal. It is something that requires a lot of courage and hard work. There are a lot of treatments available when it comes to drug addiction, among which detox, therapies, and counseling are prominent. Detox is the start of the long process in which you learn how to kick off the habit of drugs and manage their driving and learn how to avoid the relapse.

Counselling & individual therapy

Counseling is the pillar of substance abuse treatment because addiction is more than a physical dependence on the drug. Family counseling, group therapies, individual counseling, and other types of therapies are used to help the abuser stay calm and learn to cope with the mental health changes while getting the treatment.

All these therapies in counseling sessions are equally important, but individual therapy is something many people prefer because it respects your privacy and priorities. Individual counseling is a one on one session where you and your counselor discuss the problems that need you to fall for the drugs and the other things that upset you.

These counselors are the therapist or the psychiatrist most of the time. Participating in the counseling not only helps process your problem but also makes you heal quicker and faster. These sessions are scheduled according to your daily routine so that you can get the treatment without compromising on your responsibilities.

Different types of individual counseling

There are three different types of individual counseling named as; CBT, DBT, motivational enhancement, matrix model, 12 step facilitation, and family camping.

  • CBT is meant to build a skill that helps you to get rid of the negative thoughts and develop a positive attitude.
  • DBT is to regulate your emotional health. These therapies help you cope with the daily challenges balancing your emotions at the same time.
  • Family therapies are meant to help you heal faster. These involve your family members and the loved ones to assure you that your actions are not affecting them severely. Moreover, they are designed in a way to help you understand how your family thinks about you.
  • Motivational enhancement helps a person to stay motivated during the recovery process. The motivational speakers and the survivors mostly conduct these therapies.
  • The matrix model involves the therapist and the patient. It is like a session between a teacher and a coach where the patient is made to learn the different ways to avoid the relapse. This includes self-help programs that are meant to help the patient boost his self-confidence and discover a healthy lifestyle.
  • 12 step facilitation is a type of therapy in which the patient recognizes his drug addiction problem and surrenders himself to the doctors knowingly that he alone cannot fight with the addiction. This therapy comprises 12 steps in which the patient participates where each step brings him closer to the recovery.
