The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Opposing Narratives on Both Sides

We need some history and context to gain insight into the past, current, and potential future. Then we get back to the significance of stories.

Second, why did the Jews choose that particular corner of the Middle East as a haven? Given Judaism’s long connection to the Holy Land and the tragic history of Jewish persecution in Europe, Jews wanted a place to go where they would be welcomed as Jews.

What would have happened to them after WWII? “The world seemed to be split into parts those places where Jews could not live and those places where Jews could not enter,” said Chaim Weizmann, Israel’s first President.

In Israel, Jews make up the majority. Israel has a population of 5.5 million Jews and 1.3 million Arabs. Arabs account for 20% of Israel’s population.

By some they are viewed as second-class people who face a great deal of prejudice. Most Israelis will not dispute this, despite the fact that Arabs sit in the Knesset.

Israel’s press is among the most free in the world, and definitely in the Middle East. Israel’s judicial system is truly autonomous.

Nonetheless, the large number of Arabs in the country can become an issue. They’ve recently been more assertive.

I am worried about Israel’s current situation as well as the Palestinians’ situation. It’s stuck in a political and military stalemate that’s getting serious.

Human is more important

In the recent fighting between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist militant group that has ruled Gaza since 2007, at least twelve Israelis have died including one child, and 200 injured due to Hamas rockets.

About 70 Palestinians, including 16 children, have died, over 300 have been wounded, and entire apartment buildings have been flattened in Gaza due to Israeli airstrikes.

Whatever the reason is behind this mishap but if we see who is suffering from all these mishaps and fighting are the people from both sides they both have their families and homes which they lose one and the other day.

The other countries must look into this matter and solve this on an immediate basis so that they can save the lives of innocent people from both sides.

Biden Condemns

The Biden administration has openly and vehemently condemned Hamas for indiscriminately shooting rockets at Israeli civilians.

Despite this, it has declined to openly criticise Israel for precision bombing civilian targets in Gaza, instead of repeating the mantra that “Israel has the right to defend itself.”

“He expressed the President’s unwavering support for Israel’s protection and for its legitimate right to defend itself and its citizens, while protecting civilians.

That kind of unwavering support for Israel would not have ruffled many Democrats’ feathers 20 or even ten years ago.

However, the times have changed. The political party has shifted. It’s now doing more than just ruffling people’s feathers.

By just stepping in to name Hamas’ acts which are condemnable and refusing to acknowledge Palestinian human rights. This is a neutral view on the Israel Palestine conflict.

Importance of human rights

This presents a challenge for Biden, who ran on a platform of putting human rights “at the centre” of his foreign policy.

Instead, he’s being entangled in the old US-Israel policy, while his left flank becomes more outspoken on Israeli-Palestinian issues.

A Democratic Senate staffer told me, “It’s dividing the party.” “It’s dividing people into those who believe human rights support includes Palestinians and those who don’t.”

Democrats in Congress are more likely than Biden to condemn Israel.

While his party moves forward on this subject, Biden remains immobile. In March, a Gallup poll found that 53% of Democrats supported putting more pressure on Israel to reach a deal to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, up 10% from 2018 and 20 points higher than in 2008.

This result coincided with poll after poll showing that liberal Democrats became less sympathetic to Israel than they were in the past, even though most Americans still support Israel and the US-Israel alliance.

Former President Donald Trump’s pro-Israel bias.

Trump gave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nearly all he desired as president, including recognition of Israeli sovereignty over contested territories such as the Golan Heights.

The relocation of the US Embassy to Jerusalem, and a “peace plan” that met nearly all of Netanyahu’s demands.

Meanwhile, Trump shut down a Palestinian political office in Washington, DC, halted assistance to the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and essentially severed relations with senior Palestinian officials.

Final Words

Whatever the reason is behind this conflict, It is people who struggle and face the results from both sides at the end of the day. Human life is more important from both sides than to have a place.
