What is Dual Inverter and Triple Inverter in Air Conditioners?

Dual inverter and triple inverter AC explained

The use of inverters is not new to our ears. It has been used for a long time as a separate device to regular the voltage and flow of current. This basically controls the power supply to the compressor.  Almost all the present day ACs have built in inverters. The use of these is that the rate of gas flow to the AC can be controlled by adjusting the speed of the compressor which is in turn controlled by the power supply. This as we all know saves electricity, makes the environment is a lot more comfortable and doesn’t burn a hole in the pocket.

With the development in technology, one could not stop at the mere use of inverters in ACs and hence dual and the latest triple inverter has come into the picture.

So what does dual AC do? Or how are they better?

In the conventional inverter AC, if you want a temperature of 18 degrees the AC functions at its highest. As in if the lowest it can go is 14 degrees, then it kicks off at 14 degrees and when it reaches 18 degrees it cuts off. And when the environmental temperature increases, the same process starts all over again. Due to this what happens is that if the AC functions at 1500 Watts, it starts to consume the power at that full rate. That’s about 1.5 units an hour!

On the other hand, the AC with inverter gradually brings the room temperature to the desired temperature and once as it starts to near the desired temperature, the inverter consumes less power. Later the same temperature is maintained.  What is new in an inverter AC is that they use advances level of BLDC motor which varies the speed of the compressor as per the requirement. The usage of two rotary motor gives it the name dual inverter. This gives the AC a huge range of rotational frequency.

The use of single inverter was found to have certain disadvantages like: they produced relatively a lot of noise and causes vibration. This is caused by the rotation of the shaft which vibrates the most when it moves at top speed.

Dual rotary system checks the above mentioned issues by performing with lower rate of vibration, lower noise and higher efficiency as it uses two rotaries at the phase difference of 180 degrees with respect to their compression timings, which makes the whole thing a stable show as it improves the rotational balance as well as supports the compression torque. This support assists the rotor to vary in frequency and such variance can be as wide as 700 RPM to 8000 RPM. This ability to achieve variable frequency gives way to variance in tonnage; so much so that a 1.5 ton AC can perform at the level of 0.3 ton to 1.8 ton!

A lot of companies have now taken to manufacture twin inverter AC, to name a few:

  • Daikin
  • Voltas
  • Mitsubishi
  • Godrej
  • Blue Star
  • Carrier
  • Hitachi
  • Whirlpool

Onset of 2019 came in the newbies- ACs with triple inverter. This was introduced by Samsung in India. Although the name of the previous technology- Dual inverter came from the use of twin rotary system, but unlike that, the triple inverter technology does not use the three rotary systems but uses ‘8-pole triple inverter technology’. As the name suggests, it uses 8 poles contrary to the conventional 4 pole usage, Just the way the noise levels and vibrations were reduced by the use of an extra rotary motor in twin rotary inverter system, in the triple rotary system the use of extra 4 poles reduces the vibrations as it does not produce too many torque fluctuations, this makes the system a lot more efficient. It cools up to 67% faster than an average AC even in the hottest of hot weathers like 68 degree Celsius! It saves up to 69% of more energy there by making it a lot more pocket friendly.

Features of Samsung’s launched product are:

  • The triple inverter functions on advanced Digital inverter 8-pole motor.
  • The condensers in the AC are durafin condensers which are said to be faster at cooling.
  • The AC comes with a convertible mode which basically senses the crowd or the number of people in the room and cools accordingly. So if there are a lot of people in the room, it turns colder to maintain the desired temperature, and when the numbers of people are less, it doesn’t function as rigorously.
  • The convertibility of the AC has different ranges as per the tonnage. Example: a 2 ton AC can function at a lower limit of 1.5 ton, 1.5 ton can work at 1 ton and 1 ton can go down to 0.8 ton.
  • It comes in total of 36 models of both PFC and copper.
  • The company gives 10 years of warrantee on the compressor and 5 years warrantee on condenser, and 2 year warrantee on PCB controller for both the inner and outer units.

A little know-how

Q1. What is torque?

A- It is the force that causes rotation of the motor.

Q2. What is compression?

A- The compressor is a part of the AC, which functions like a human heart. It draws in cold, lower pressure refrigerant gas from within the doors and then the raises its temperature and pressure so as to heat up the gas which then exists.

Q3. What is a DuraFin condenser?

A- DuraFin is a company which produces some of the most crucial parts of an air conditioner. DuraFin condensers are known to be of a higher quality.
