5 Things to Update When Moving Houses

Have you ever been living at a property for several months and then suddenly realise that you haven’t heard from someone in a while or perhaps you did not receive your rewards points for a scheme you are part of? After mulling it over, it dawns on you that you didn’t update your address when you moved.

It’s easier than you might think for it to slip your mind completely, but these quick tips can really help you out.

Get Your Mail Redirected

One of the most effective systems to set up when moving, you don’t have to wait until you’re living at your new property to get your mail redirected. It allows your mail to still reach you and gives you more time to contact all of the places individually to update your address preferences, without letting you miss out on any mailing update.

Tell Your Employer

It’s important to let HR know that you are moving so they can update all payroll information they hold for you. Even if you are self-employed, you may still have clients that require updates in terms of your details. Whether you work from a tower block of offices in a large corporation, a coworking space in London shared with fellow creatives, or from the edge of your kitchen table, take an extra moment to think about who needs to know your new credentials.

Take Final Meter Readings

Before you leave your old place, take note of the gas, electric and water metre readings. Also, do this before moving into your new property as soon as you get possession. Keeping a record of this will help you to not get billed for someone else’s usage.

Move Your TV License

Whilst this might not apply to you if you are renting somewhere that includes all bills, or you are lucky enough to live in a country where there is no such fee for owning a TV, in the UK it is something that will need to be updated. It’s easy to do and can complete online.

Register With the Electoral Roll

As polls are not that often in the UK, it can be easy to forget to do until it is too late. Registering to vote from your new address is especially important if you are moving districts or areas. It takes about five minutes to do and can even get completed online. It is well worth doing so you do not lose your chance to vote in any upcoming election that you might have.
