How Cop Plastics Can Improve Medicine

Medical materials can only be as helpful or as valuable as the materials that they’re made out of, and when it comes to people’s lives being on the line, medical equipment needs to be made out of the highest quality materials around.

However, not all materials that are used in the medical field are created equal, and this is especially true when it comes to the grade of plastic that is used.

Keep reading to learn how some forms of plastic are known for standing above the rest.

What Is One Of The Highest Grades Of Plastic?

One of the highest forms of plastic that can be found on the market is cyclooefin polymers. This material is made from at least one cyclic monomer. In most cases, the term is used in reference to cyclic olefin polymers (COP).  COP plastic, when it is produced by the right company, is known for being the most sought after plastic in the medical field.

What Makes COP Plastics Different From Other Forms Of Plastic?

COP plastics are a highly sought after form of plastic in the medical field because it has such a pure grade of cyclo olefin polymer. It’s such a high quality grade that COP plastic can be a purer grade than some kinds of medical glass.

Many healthcare professionals and manufacturers prefer medical grade plastic over medical grade glass though because the plastics can produce less problems than what some medical grade glasses provide. For instance, COP plastic has a non-ionic and inert surface to it. This will help cut down on the amounts of denaturation, delamination, and agglomeration that can sometimes take place in medical grade glasses.

COP plastic is also extremely easy to clean, making it the perfect substance for being in a medical environment. Since COP plastic is a higher grade than other kinds of plastic, it also won’t start to leak or emit anything nasty that definitely shouldn’t be ending up in a person’s body. COP plastics provide the durability of medical grade plastics without the usual pitfalls that make doctors and medical manufacturers nervous to use plastic.

Will I Notice A Difference If Glass Was Replaced With Plastic In Medical Devices?

More than likely, you’d be unable to notice a visible difference between the glass and plastic that are in medical devices unless you were a manufacturing expert. This is because COP plastic is so clear. It gives the same effect as glass where a user would be able to see right through it.

What Are Some Other Advantages For COP Plastic Over Glass?

In addition to some of the main advantages that were listed above, COP plastic is far less likely to break or be cracked as the medical item is used over time. This can mean the difference between life and death depending on the medical device and the patient its being used on. It also means that hospitals or doctors offices can save money because they’ll be able to use a medical device with COP plastic for a longer period of time.

COP plastics also weigh less than glass or other, lower grades of medical plastics. Due to this trait, doctors can be more agile during surgery with the utensils they’re using and they’ll be less inclined to feel fatigue as quickly.

COP Plastics Can Allow For Medical Manufacturers To Become More Creative

Another major advantage of the use COP plastic instead of glass is that COP plastic can provide a much more versatile surface for medical manufacturers to mold to fit their designs. If there are certain medical designs in the past that have been too difficult for manufacturers to make out of fear that the glass would break after a short time, then manufacturers can try to take on those new creative designs with COP plastic. In this way COP plastic will open up a whole new world for medicine to explore and improve on some of its systems that the industry already has in place.

COP plastic will also be simpler for manufacturers to mass produce the medical equipment that physicians and surgeons need making it a lucrative resource for medical manufacturers to use in their equipment.
