How to Recover Deleted Files from Synology NAS?

Synology offers Network Attached Storage (NAS) solution that serves as a file sharing center within the organization’s network. It allows users to perform various tasks, such as storing, managing, and sharing files via DiskStation Manager (DSM). It also offers backup applications, such as Hyper Backup and Snapshot Replication.

Sometimes, users lose important files due to accidental deletion while clearing unnecessary files. They may also lose crucial files while transferring the files to an external storage or sharing with other users if any interruption occurs. Nevertheless, recovery of such deleted files is possible. In this article, we’ve discussed some easy methods to recover deleted files from Synology NAS drives.

Methods to Recover Deleted Files from Synology NAS

Follow the methods discussed below to perform deleted NAS data recovery.

#1 Recover Deleted Files from Recycle Bin

If the Recycle Bin feature is enabled for each shared folder, you can restore the deleted files from there. Follow the steps given below:

  • Locate and open File Station.
  • Go to the shared folder for which the Recycle Bin feature is enabled.
  • Next, go to the #recycle subfolder. Search for the deleted files.
  • If you’re using DSM 7.1 and above versions, select and right-click the files you want to recover and select Restore. This will restore the files to their original location.
  • If you’re using DSM 7 and below versions, right-click on the files, go to Copy to/Move to > Move to, and then save the files at the desired location.

#2 Use Backup Options to Restore Deleted Files

Hyper Backup is Synology’s integrated backup solution that helps you create, manage, and track data backup. The backup comes in handy when you encounter any data loss scenario, such as file deletion, drive formatting, etc. So, if you have taken the backup of iSCSI LUN (Logical Unit Number) backup on external storage devices or another Synology NAS device with Hyper Backup, follow the steps mentioned below to recover the deleted data:

  • Go to Hyper Backup. In the upper-left corner, click on Restore.
  • Select Data or LUN. Choose the restoration task to retrieve data from a local repository.
  • If you want to recover data from an external repository, select Res         tore from existing repositories.
  • Choose a backup destination and click Start to launch the LUN Restoration Wizard and recover LUNs.
  • Further, select the system configuration and different versions of data, enter the password (if the data is encrypted), and follow the prompts to complete the restoration process.

#3 Use NAS Data Recovery Software

If neither the Recycle Bin is enabled nor the backup is available, then the only option is to use an advanced NAS data recovery tool, such as Stellar Toolkit for Data Recovery. With this software, you can quickly recover deleted or lost files from Synology NAS drives. You only need to connect your NAS drives to the system, launch the software, and start the recovery process.

Steps to recover deleted files from Synology NAS drives using the software are as follows:

  • Turn off the NAS and remove all the hard drives from it. Remember the sequence in which they were aligned in the NAS box.
  • Connect all the drives in the same sequence to your system via USB to SATA converter cables.
  • Download, install, and launch Stellar Toolkit for Data Recovery on your system.
  • Click ‘All Data’ from the ‘Select What to Recover’ screen and click Next.
  • Select Synology Disk under Connected Drives on the next window and click Scan.
  • The scanning process will initiate. Once the process is complete, the software will list all the files under three panes: File Type, Tree View, and Deleted List.
  • You can check the Deleted List. It will contain all the files deleted from your NAS drives.
  • Select the files you want to restore, turn on the file preview to check their quality, and click Recover.
  • Further, click Browse to choose the desired location to store the recoverable files.
  • Click Start-Saving. The files will be saved at the chosen location.

Conclusion

Recovering deleted files from Synology NAS is easy if you take the right approach. If the Recycle Bin feature is enabled, it should be the first place to look for the deleted files. However, if the Recycle Bin is not enabled or emptied, you can rely on Synology’s integrated backup solution (Hyper Backup) or use an advanced NAS data recovery software such as Stellar Toolkit for Data Recovery. The software supports recovery of data from RAID 0, 5, 6, and SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) drives.
