Know These Safety Points When Trying to Find a Tattoo Shop Near You

Body art is an amazing way to express yourself. Some people choose to get tattoos to show their beliefs or memorialize a loved one or pet who’s died. Finding a tattoo parlor that meets your needs is important.

One of the most important things that you need to find out when you’re trying to answer the question “what’s are the best tattoo shops near me?” is how each place handles cleanliness and sanitization.

Certain aspects of tattoo parlor cleanliness and sanitization are governed by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. Understanding a few basic standards may help you as you try to evaluate tattoo shops.

Consider these points if you’re researching tattoo parlors near you.

Protective Equipment

The tattoo artist must wear specific personal protective equipment. This is done for their protection and yours. At a minimum, they should wear a barrier gown and gloves. OSHA also notes that eye protection is also imperative for tattoo artists.

Anything that comes into contact with a client’s skin or bodily fluids should be changed prior to the artist working with the next client. At a minimum, gloves and gowns must be changed between each client.

Sanitization of Non-Disposable Equipment

Non-disposal equipment, such as tattoo guns, are used on more than one client. These should be cleaned in hot, soapy water before being sterilized in an autoclave.

Some items might not be able to be scrubbed and placed in the autoclave. Those items should be sterilized in an antibacterial solution. Acetate stencils, for example, would just be cleaned using this method.

One thing that shouldn’t ever be shared between clients is the needle for the tattoo gun. A new needle must be used for each client.

Single-Use Items

Markers and other single-use items should be disposed of after each client. Some items, such as paper stencils, run the risk of being contaminated with blood or bodily fluids. Those should be disposed of in a hazardous waste bin.

Needles should be disposed of in a sharps container after they are used. Tattoo machine tubes and razors must also go in these containers. This helps to prevent people from coming into contact with them.

Disposing of all waste in an appropriate manner helps to protect the tattoo shop employees. It also helps to ensure that each client has a clean and sanitary area where they can get their tattoos without having to worry about being contaminated with someone else’s bodily fluids.

Overall Cleanliness

You can’t look at only the tattoo equipment and spaces when you’re trying to determine whether a tattoo shop is clean and sanitary. Take the time to look at the waiting area and anywhere else that’s open to the public. All of these spaces should be just as clean as the spaces where the tattoos are done.

Approximately 38 percent of adults who are 18 to 29 years old have one or more tattoos. If you’re ready to join them, regardless of your age, finding a tattoo parlor that’s clean and sanitary to tattoo you is important. Once you find the tattoo artist who does work that you like, you may stick with them for your future tattoos.
