Kuo: Redesigned 2021 MacBook Pro Will Have HDMI Port and SD Card Reader

Earlier it was reported that they will also return the MagSafe magnetic port, which many users requested. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has refined his predictions about the new design for the 2021 MacBook Pro line. First, it was only an outline, and we didn’t know what functions the new MacBook Pro would have.

As previously reported, Apple’s professional laptops with ARM chips will come in two sizes: 14″ and 16″. It is comfortable to study, work, play Mega Vault Millionaire, edit videos, and so on. The shape of the case will become more rectangular similar to the iPad Air, iPad Pro, and iPhone 12, and additional connectors will appear on the edges: HDMI, SD card reader, and a magnetic port for MagSafe charging. Of course, this is good news for everyone who waited for more functional models. They won’t need to buy an additional adapter as all the possibilities are added to the new model.

The reasons for the return to outdated specialized ports, which were abandoned in 2016 in favor of faster, more reliable, and versatile Thunderbolt 3, haven’t been disclosed. Perhaps it is a deterioration in relations with Intel, which owns the rights to the Thunderbolt standard. At the same time, for some users these options are preferable, and now they have a choice of a laptop that will correspond to all their needs.

Apple Pro Display XDR and some other monitors use Thunderbolt or USB-DP, but most TVs and displays come with HDMI — in four years Apple hasn’t been able to make USB-C video the standard. Likewise with SD cards. Some cameras and camcorders can quickly connect to a laptop via USB-C or even save footage to a removable SSD with a USB-C interface, but most equipment, including a professional one, still uses the usual memory cards.

In addition to a more professional-friendly set of interfaces, MacBook Pro will also receive new screens with modern mini-LED backlighting. In them, miniature LEDs are located not along the edge, but behind the matrix and can change brightness independently of each other, which significantly increases the contrast and allows you to display more advanced HDR.

Additional Possibilities

The MacBook Pro will run on the second-generation Apple M processor, which is expected to be called the M1X. The chip will be much better than before as it will receive:

  • double the number of high-performance cores;
  • a higher frequency;
  • support for 32 GB of RAM;
  • twice as powerful graphics subsystem.

It is expected that Apple will try to achieve certain standards for its gadgets to avoid the use of different adapters and additional items to work with the laptop. At the same time, it is still not completely clear what they will look like.

Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the updated line of MacBook Pro will be presented in the second half of the year at one of the presentations scheduled for the fall.
