The history of LG dates back to World War II when the company was established as a manufacturer of household chemicals. From the tooth powder factory, Koo In-hwoi, the founder of LG, managed to make a world electronics giant.
In 1947 the small factory grew into a large chemical company, which stopped producing tooth powder, switching to an innovative toothpaste. This is when the Lucky brand appeared. And until 1953, the Lucky toothpaste had no competitors on the Korean market.
Soon the brand will get engaged in the production of all kinds of household chemicals and cosmetics. The Lucky face cream became a true legend for all Korean women.
Among other innovations, Lucky was the first to start selling products in plastic packages, which replaced glass and porcelain containers.
The founder of the company noticed the new opportunity for his business in the mid-1950s when started feeling the problems in communication between the regions of Korea while distributing Lucky cosmetic products. So Koo In-hwoi decided to provide every family with an affordable radio receiver as soon as possible.
As a result, in 1958, a GoldStar factory was opened. And in just one year the first radio receivers appeared on the shelves. Already in 1961 – the company produces the first phone and starts thinking of a global expansion.
The company under the leadership of Koo In-hwoi quickly set up production of various home appliances – fans, refrigerators, TV sets, elevators, electric transporters, and other electrical appliances filled the domestic market. And in 1962 for the first time, Korean appliances were exported to America and Hong Kong.
Then, the first Korean refrigerator (1965), first Korean B/W television repeater (1966), first Korean air conditioner (1968), first Korean washing machine (1969), first cassette player (1973) were released. Then, the production capacity was expanded (1975 and 1976), and the first Korean color TV (1977) was supplied to the conveyor belt. Those pioneering appliances were larger and more difficult to use than modern ones. Today, if you see error codes on LG dishwasher, you can easily deal with them.
In 1987, Goldstar opens a factory in Germany. And In 1990-1995, plants were built in Russia, Italy, China, Egypt, Thailand, and the UK. The company adopts a development program, the key aspect of which is the popularization of Lucky and Goldstar brand products through more efficient production and improved quality of goods.
In 1995, it was decided to rename the group LG Electronics (Lucky Goldstar Electronics). The company continues to sell electronics under the brand name Goldstar, and household chemicals and other products – as Lucky.
The first logo with the new company’s name was introduced in the same year. And the minimalist emblem, which has become iconic by now, has a lot of meanings in it, though it is only based on two letters. The LG logo is something to look at.
Today, LG is a giant not only among manufacturers of household appliances but also among companies producing cell phones and portable computer equipment.
